Sporting the Sporty Look
1/25/00

Under normal circumstances, I am not one to wear athletic looking clothing. How can I write a column about a style I do not wear? Well after a winter filled with many NBA games and other sporting events (not to mention some killer sales) I have been inspired! If you are like me and do not own a great deal of sporty wear, where do you start? Invest in a killer pair of sneakers. Check out your local Lady Foot Locker or Just for Feet.

Many sneaker companies manufacture their shoes up to sizes 10 or 11. If that still will not help, take a look at the men's section. Ask to be measured for an accurate man's fit. You can spend a lot or a little, depending on your budget. Try to find a pair with colors that match your wardrobe. For instance, do not get a pair of red kicks when you wear mostly blue.

Even though you are dressing down, you still want to follow basic fashion rules. While you are searching for sneakers, keep your eyes peeled for some sporty clothes. One of my favorites is the "break away" pant that basketball players wear. Most labels carry up to a XXL in the men's section that will fit up to a size 22 or so. You can get them in the colors of your favorite NBA team or, if you are not a basketball fan, in your favorite color scheme. This is a great opportunity to put together an outfit to go with your shoes. These can be found at any sporting good store, many department stores and specialty stores like Niketown.

T-shirts and sweatshirts are always a good look to complete the outfit. Chances are you already have these in your closet and can get more rather cheaply. Keep an eye out for zippered sweatshirts, too. Gap has a great one for those on a budget. You can also pair a t-shirt and a cardigan with sporty pants. It is a little more "dressy" option if you are not prone to dressing down (like me).

Now it's time to kick back and relax in your sporty new gear. Here is yet another option that proves that you do not need to go glam in order to look good.
