More Cheap Accessories: Shawls
4/5/01
Shawls are really cheap to make, despite what expensive dress makers may
say! These pricey cover-ups can cost up to $35 dollars for a straight piece
of material with one hem! How ridiculous! Beat this pricey mark-up by
making your own.
Head to the craft store (boy are they tired of seeing you there)! and
purchase material. You can buy tulle very inexpensively. This netting-like
material is see-through, but works beautifully for a cover-up on a chilly
night.
You'll need three yards of fabric (allowing enough for cutoff and
mistakes). When you get home, turn the material inside out. Stitch along
the edge of the fold. This straight stitch should make the material a long,
hollow rectangle. Turn the material right side out. The hem should now be
inside of your shawl. (where hardly anyone will notice it)! Iron the fabric
and your ready to go!
If you want to get really fancy, you can add some beading to this as
well. Follow the same method as you did for your gloves. Be sure you don't
rip through this fragile material, though. The tulle is easily damageable.
Don't pull too hard on the thread and you'll avoid this mistake.
