Denim Dream
1/11/00
Y'know, Ladies, denim never went out! And now
it's back- bigger and badder than ever! It's rebellious,
playful, trendy, and artsy. Acid wash (yes, acid wash!
Bring back Axl Rose!) and tye-dye are hot, even rhinestones
and sequined appliques are seen glittering on jean jackets
and skirts. What better way to gallavant around the city
than in a snug fitting pair of denim jeans? You can even
spice denim up with your own creative touch: some adhesive,
and cloth or sequins.
At local San Diego hip hop shows, girls are seen
wearing denim jackets in tiny sizes and dark dyes. The
sleeves are often cuffed or left unbuttoned with the pockets
and elbows faded out. Full denim outfits (jacket plus
matching jeans) were also seen. Some girls were wearing
loose fitting faded out vintage levis, fitted fleece
pullovers with heads gloriously wrapped in African prints.
In the mainstream hip hop scene, Lauryn Hill has an expert
take on denim-she rocks a hybrid fashion between couture and
hip hop style.
Remember the Bedazzler (look for it at
www.DJHOBBY.com)?! Metal studs are popping up all over
spring season's hot rocker look and can easily add to your
own urban fashion savvy. This is only another creative
outlet for your favorite pair of jeans, jacket or skirt.
Try something funky at home and paint on your own design or
sew in some fake fur on the bottoms of capri jeans or a knee
length denim skirt to wear to a bumpin blockparty. To go
simple but chic, denim jackets always look fabulous over a
fitted white tank and an East Indian or African inspired
skirt or sari. Spring is the season to bring out your old
denim and spice it up, and even splurge to get that pair of
vintage Levis or a pair fitted dark denim.
Peace,
Chako S.
