Making the Fall Runway Fashions Work For You
8/28/00
School has started for most of you, so that first day twinge of anxiety is over and
hopefully you are getting back into the swing of academic life---but probably not just yet,
right ? :) While you've been hitting the books (or at least *attempting* to) I've been
scouring the magazines for fall runway looks that can be adapted to sassy and sexy scholars
like yourselves. Fortunately, there is a plethora of wardrobe update pieces that I can share
with you to liven up your fall ensemble.
This season the designers were really hitting on a "jet-setting" look and updated a
lot of classics with new shapes and cuts. This means that accessories mean a lot and thrift
stores can be your Mecca for fall fashion finds.
A slew of designers from Fendi to Versace had their models strutting down the runway
in fur jackets and fur accents. Though this look is flashy, rich, and reminiscent of the
dynamic diva duo, Lil' Kim and Miss Mary, it can be a funky and bold statement to your tiny
party dress. Anything satin and delicate provides a great juxtaposition of contrasting
textures. A midlegth coat is definitely the best length to get as it looks great with short
to midlength satin or chiffon dresses (a la Sarah Jessica and her white fur coat with purple
satin skin tight dress) and slim, dark or faded boot-cut denim. A great accessory for fur is
a big pair of gold aviator sunglasses. Please remember to only purchase FAUX FUR!
Another trend to try is easily accessible in any thrift store. Look for pieces in
tweed, houndstooth and plaid. Pair these with fitted blouses or low slung pleather pants-they
can even go with vintage 70's tee's (Think Charlie's Angels). Midlength coats in tweed and
houndstooth are hot and your old plaid can be updated with a spattering of studs or
rhinestones much like those seen in Dolce & Gabanna's rock style version.
If you are scrimping on your wardrobe like the rest of us, try little things like a
wide rimmed fedora hate tilted to cover one eye like Aaliyah or pick up long scarves in fall
colors and geometric patterns to wrap around your hair or neck. Belts are really big for fall
in gold chains or skinny and belted over a thin sweater or coat. For a classy look, pearls
immediately make a blouse or black dress elegant (Remember Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at
Tiffany's?). Also you can buy fake flowers from your local craft store and make yourself
a pretty corsage as seen by Martine Sitbon. Lastly the baguette is out! The new purses are
shaped like doctor or granny bags or have hip length gold chains like in the 80's. Good luck,
trooper. Be daring! I'm sure by now you've heard your mother say, "OHMYGAWD! I remember
wearing that when I was a kid!!" This is your cue to ask her if she kept any of it
around....!
