Finally, Make-Up Expressly for the Hip/Young Urbanite
4/24/01
If ya haven't heard, Prom is right around the corner. I bet you're freaking out! So what're
you going to wear?
Quick tip before we get into my article: those silly old glam poofy prom
dresses are IT (Take a look at Sofia Coppola's frilly number from a couple months back or Chloe's
cutesy horse printed cream colored dress). Go with simple hair - go a little bed-headish or try
something sleek like Julia Roberts at the Grammys. Pair this pretty party frock with pointy white
heels a la Versace or delicate folded ankle socks with your pumps and a Members Only jacket for a
hipster look.
So we've got a little something down for the dress, but what about the face? Every hip girl knows
that the answer to all your party-face dilemmas lies in one name: HARD CANDY!
If you haven't heard the fabulous success story of Hard Candy's 22 year-old creator, Dineh Mohajer,
then you've definitely been living in a cave for the past six years. Hard Candy was accidentally
launched in 1995 by Mohajer, who was a pre-med student at the University of Southern California.
She simply wanted to create a nail color to match her baby blue sandals. Using her chemistry
knowledge, she whipped something up, painted and sauntered around town. She received compliment
upon compliment upon compliment. She immediately recognized a business venture and dashed forward
with her newly formed product to Los Angeles's infamous retailer, Fred Segal. She went from a
200 bottle order from Segal's to famous people toting around her makeup in their purses: Britney
Spears, Madonna, Sarah Michelle Gellar and even Lenny Kravitz!
Her products are inspired by music (my guess is House, Electronic, and Hip Hop-in her favorites
she mentions popular underground hip hop duo, Dilated Peoples!) and street fashion. She created
eyeliner with micro-sized glitter (my personal favorite), a plethora of fabulous and fierce eye
shadows with glitter, brow pencils, blushes with silver/goldish colored highlighters and glitter
shadow sticks. Everything a girl could want for going out or cooling out. With backing from such
big fashion Magazines as Bazaar and Vogue, you know the girl is doin' somethin' right!
With Prom coming up, glitter is all the rage for the face. Try her glitter eye eyeliners
(comes with a brush on one end!) in dark colors (try the black or the brown) and apply liberally
around the eye. What you're going for is that sexy, smoky look that was achieved on the Spring
runways.
For the lips try her Super Shine Gloss that comes with glitter as well (to shine in the
moonlight of course! Or under the spotlight as you're receiving Prom Queen!) in Pop or Babydoll.
You want your lips to look natural colored and shiny with your smoky eyes. Go light on the
blusher-try Blusher with Highlights in Sunshine or Starlight.
If you're too old or too young for Prom and want to try something fun, HARD CANDY'S colored
mascara is FABULOUS. I have black eyelashes and I didn't think it'd work on me---but I was
sooooo wrong. I have her bold, bright blue mascara and it looks fabulous and funky with a
smudged blue eyeliner or blue eye shadow with a little silver eye shadow/highlighter to create
that other-worldly look.
Any of her eye shadow quartets are awesome as well (Try Disco).
I can really back them up because I own four of them!! Unlike most quartets you can use ALL
the colors and they can be intense or very light and fun.
Although the prices are a little high,
the product is well worth it, even if you just want to try one eye shadow or one glitter eyeliner
(I wear mine almost every day!). You can find her products at Sephora, Hardcandy.com, Macy's,
Neiman Marcus and other acclaimed boutiques and shops.
To give your face a little 'pop', try
Hard Candy's funky colors (I highly recommend any of her eyes shadows or glitter sticks) with
any of your urban attire or party gear.
